Thoughts after releasing RPG Version 0.1

Almost two weeks of frenzied organizing, formatting and ad hoc playtesting paid off!

After a year or two of worldbuilding and concepts, I recently entered the Itch.io Menorah Game Jam  to finally put together a Version 0.1 of my Milhamah: Fighting Words RPG. Here are some thoughts on the creative process:

Victories:

  • In 12 days, I got 53 pages organized and formatted, including core rules and a character sheet. I'm glad the ancient history and quest tables got in there before the deadline.
  • Sometimes killing your darlings makes a game run more smoothly. My original intent was to have three different types of dice in MFWRPG: green akhbi, red atbash and blue albam. The red and blue dice have different Hebrew letter configurations on them. Swapping and flipping these dice  was supposed to be a way for experienced players to manipulate the dice to reliably get the results you want if you're knowledgeable with the dice. But I thought that mechanic might be too much for new audiences, so I scrapped it in the Simple Edition. I hope to someday make that mechanic workable, but for now it's more important to nail the basics.

Setbacks:

In the end, I didn't have time to finalize all the enemies, items and speech acts I had envisioned. I have enough concept art content to make dozens of heroes, enemies and monsters. But with creating characters comes creating their special equipment and speech acts. I didn't even get a chance to finish doing that for the six parts (character classes) that made it in to  Version 0.1.  Also, Avgad's prominent locations didn't make the deadline, and neither did the lore behind the Holy Tongue Society, Bavel and the 'Ivrit Revival Movement.

While a few chapters got some proofreading, other parts were written by the seat of my pants, and it shows. I've already been doing an in-depth revision of Chapter 1 and found a few errors. Some were due to pasting right-to-left Hebrew into InDesign.

Outlook:

I can't wait to fix those errors, finesse a few concepts and release Version 0.1.1 this month . With a more polished book, I look forward to getting more feedback from playtesters. Also, a big goal this week is to get the Etsy shop online so I can sell physical dice. Releasing the dice app is another goal, and I hope to get it running by next month.

Questions:

For readers who downloaded the book, what did you think about the RPG rules and core play mechanics? What were the best parts, and  what didn't make sense? Also, what would you like to see in terms of worldbuilding? Any feedback is welcome!
